What’s the weather like?
Like all of Colorado, we’re happy to report that humidity just isn’t an issue. The summers are generally sunny with the occasional afternoon thundershower and air quality, which can impact some larger municipalities, is almost always clear in Castle Rock. Our average high temperature is about 80 degrees during the summer dropping to 50 degrees at night. Fall is colorful with warm temperatures often lasting through October. In the winter our average daytime high temperature is about 50 degrees dropping to about 20 degrees at night. Snowstorms aren’t unusual, and generally accumulate a few inches of snow before melting either within the day or a couple days. However, we occasionally have large snowstorms that bring up to several feet of snow. Spring is our wettest season, when approximately two inches of precipitation falls each month mixed with occasional hail. The spring rain is followed by colorful wildflower and cacti blooming throughout our open space areas. No matter what the season, the weather can change quickly in Castle Rock so follow your mother’s sound advice and bring a jacket.
What about the commute to work & public transportation? Sixty percent of Castle Rock’s residents currently commute to somewhere in Denver. Driving to the Tech Center during peak weekday traffic takes about 30 minutes and driving to downtown Denver takes about 50 minutes. You can cut those times in half if you commute during non-peak hours. Castle Rock also lies mid-way between downtown Denver and Colorado Springs; commute times to Colorado Springs takes aabout 50 minutes. Fortunately, Castle Rock partners with Colorado Springs to provide the FrontRange Express, a commuter bus service running between Colorado Springs and Denver locations on weekdays with a stop in Castle Rock; |
A safe community?
A national study recently gave Castle Rock a score of 16 for the chance of experiencing a personal crime and 36 a property crime (the national average is 100 and anything lower is better). Seventy-six of our residents report that crime is either no problem or only a minor problem and 84 percent feet that our Castle Rock Police Department's services are either good or excellent. We ask residents to help maintain our low crime rate by taking sensible security precautions that keep our community from becoming an easy target. According to 94 percent of our residents, our Castle Rock Fire and Rescue Department's services are either good or excellent. We staff four fire stations full-time with professional fire and medical response crews. The 2005 average response time was 5 minutes and 37 seconds.
A good place to raise kids?
Families make up 77 percent of Castle Rock’s households and 87 percent of residents feel that Castle Rock is a good or excellent place to raise children. When it snows, we even open the driving range at our Red Hawk Ridge Golf Course so children have a safe place to sled. The Castle Rock Parks and Recreation Department also offers a wide variety of child programming… from swim lessons to roller hockey, Kid’s Club Camp to Tiny Tykes and Me and the Jr. Golf Academy to T-ball. Douglas County School District has a tradition of educational excellence that strives to put children first. Its mission is to provide an educational foundation that allows each student to reach his or her individual potential. Douglas County students continue to outpace state performance in every grade and on every subject tested by the Colorado Student Assessment Program (CSAP). Results of the 2005 CSAP third-grade reading tests released in May 2005 show that 83 percent of Douglas County students scored in the proficient or advanced category. CSAP scores released in July 2005 for students in grades 3-10 show stability or gains across the board in reading, writing and science. Mathematics scores increased at all grade levels. Well-established high school programs in sports, music, forensics, marketing, business and journalism have earned state and national recognition. Laying the foundation for many of these successes are strong programs in the elementary and middle schools. Where it really counts is in the classroom.
